From Joseph Self's Service Record – Address, Whatstandwell; aged 24 years 1 month; gardener; born 1889; theatre of War in France; enlisted 08/03/15; demobbed 30/07/19; left Southampton 07/05/15, arrived Havre 08/05/15; 28/02/19 five days Field Punishment No 2, when detailed to parade for convoy duty failed to do so; 15/05/17 awarded 7 days CC not shaven on GOC Parade; 03/06/17 admitted to hospital with scabies;12/06/07 to duty; height 5ft 7½in; weight 144lb; Field PunishmentsField Punishment Number 1 consisted of the convicted man being shackled in irons and secured to a fixed object, often a gun wheel or similar. He could only be thus fixed for up to 2 hours in 24, and not for more than 3 days in 4, or for more than 21 days in his sentence. This punishment was often known as 'crucifixion' and due to its humiliating nature was viewed by many Tommies as unfair. Field Punishment Number 2 was similar except the man was shackled but not fixed to anything. Both forms were carried out by the office of the Provost-Marshal, unless his unit was officially on the move when it would be carried out regimentally i.e. by his own unit. 1901 Census: Crich Carr
1911 Census: Robin Hood
Joseph Self had two brothers Stephen Self and Charles Self who are also on the Roll of Honour. His sister, Harriett Self, was a Red Cross Nurse during WW1. |
