CRICH SOLDIER'S DEATH
With reference to the death at the Front of Pte John Mellors which was fully reported in the Derbyshire Times last week, Mrs James Mellors, of Crich, has since received the following note from his officer: – "It is with great regret and heartfelt sympathy that I have to inform you that your son was killed in action on May 3rd. These are hard days, especially for our mothers and wives at home, but it must be a consolation to you to know that your son was a gallant fellow and died like a true soldier. He was beloved by all the men, although he had been with us only a short time. He was killed instantly so did not suffer."
The record on the CWG site shows him as John MELLOWS as does the census records.
In the census record he is living with uncle and aunt Thomas MARSHALL and Mary Ann (née CHEETHAM). John MELLORS parents were James MELLORS and Marie (née CHEETHAM).
So, is seems that John MELLORS and John MELLOWS are one and the same.
